I don't recommend using them much at all offensively unless on high priority targets such as snipers and medics or to harass an ill-defended wit space. Usually the wit cost ends up being higher than it's worth. Defensively, very useful, as you can protect a lot of area at fairly low wit cost. Your opponent will end up spending a lot of wits to clear paths. Thorns are also great for blocking vision; you can hide snipers in them and play a game of hide-and-go-death. Possibly the top special for deceptive players.
