That is completely true, but its actually a different issue. The fact that masters and grandmasters can understand more in 10 seconds than a non-master can in 5 minutes does not actually mean that playing quickly helps anyone get stronger. I dont think there is any rigorous data on it or anything, but just about all top grandmasters believe that speed chess is not particularly helpful and can be counter-productive.

It does sound like a fun idea. I often try to play this way when folks are online. However, the asynch issues usually get in the way.
