Better Tilt Than Never

by

So we’ve finished the massive game mode update we had planned for April release. Sadly, we finished it a bit behind schedule :[. Having submitted the final binary to Apple very early this morning we suspect it’ll be a few days past our intended launch date before the game goes live on the app store. My frustration for shipping late was only outweighed by our vicious desire to not release something we felt was unfit for release. Those extra few of days of gameplay tweaking and balancing we feel paid off in spades in the end, so we’re hoping you guys will get a kick out of the new modes :). In case you already forgot about what’s going to be in this update:

  • 2 new game modes: Gauntlet and Code Red. Each with their own AGON leaderboards!
  • 6 new awards to earn and brag to your friends about
  • New how to play screen that gives a slightly better explanation of WTF is going on
  • Fixed a nasty bug causing devices with some international region formats to crash

As always with game development, we didn’t get everything we wanted in this single update, but we certainly got the fun stuff :]. We’ve got a decently sized list of user-requested improvements and features that we didn’t have much time to work through in this update, but will be hopefully addressing in a little while. We’ve got a few more goodies in the coming months for Tilt to Live so watch this space.

Oh, and mucho thanks to TA for the honor of being one of the Games of the Month for March.

Sweet! I can’t wait for it to be approved. Hopefully it won’t take longer than a week.

  2. Eli says:

I hope you guys are subscribed to Electronic Gaming Monthly, or at least check the first issue when it finally hits the street. 😉

  3. Alex says:

Oh, awesome to hear, Eli! I’ll definitely be checking that out :D.

  4. Ryan says:

Will we have to pay for the new content? Either way love the game, thanks for the continued support:):)

  5. Michael says:

I’m a player that just needs to know HOW to play (which is tilting, pretty obvious). I don’t need to know whats going on. Ok, this is what I NEED from the tutorial:
    1. Tilt anywhere to move.
    2. Don’t hit the red dots.
    3. Use the items to kill them.
    That’s all I want.
And here is what you can put in:
    4. Show them the HUD (where the score is etc.)
    5. Score a Combo by killing lots of dots in a short time. Your scored will be multiplied by (SOME RANDOM FORMULA).
    yep.

  6. Justin S. says:

Will the original achievements (such as the lightning strike one) be able to be unlocked through Code Red also, or just the original mode?

  7. thegamerocks06 says:

Awesome stuff guys. Really looking forward to this 😀

  8. shagymb says:

OMG I play this game every day, I cant get enough of it. This update is going to be awesome!

  9. Gennaro says:

@Ryan No we will not have to pay for the new content it will be a free update. YAY!

  10. Alex says:

@Michael Our ‘how to play’ screen in this update I believe covers all the points you listed.

@Justin Most of the achievements are doable from either Code Red or Classic. There are a few that are Gauntlet Mode only achievements.

  11. Bill says:

    Hi,

    Love this game!!

Thought of a couple ideas for future enhancements if you are taking them =)

    1. “Real Physics Mode” weapon detonation will kill other weapons as well as dots – a wrongly aimed laser blast can wipe out dots and weapons – perhaps weapons killed in this way wait 5 seconds to spawn?

    2. “Big Mode” – an extra inch off the borders of the screen that is live and playable – so basically the screen will slide a bit, making some stuff occur off-screen

    3. “Be the Dot Mode” – You get 1000 lives to try and kill a computer controlled arrow that is using weapons and killing dots like an arrow should – here I was thinking it could be interesting to somehow “earn” the triggers such as the 4 arrows or pong game dot formations.

Anyway, just some brainstorming – really terrific game.

You guys planning any new games?

  12. tyler says:

will this update have new weapons?

  13. SP1KE says:

    @Bill

NHF but the first two suggestions are simply stupid 😛 Image that you are in a chaos after getting above 5 million and that you have to wait for 5 sec for a weapon to spawn and that you by lightning accidentally kill other weapons like the spike shield, that would suck,
and if the screen would move there would be too many cheap deaths …

  14. Rogiervd says:

Extremely excited for the update – how long does it usually take apple to approve? Thanks guys 🙂

  15. Gennaro says:

@Rogiervd Minigore update was submited the same day as the Tilt To Live update. The mingore update is out, but sadly I don’t think apple does updates on weekend. So it should be out sometime Monday.

  16. Nic says:

I love this game. I seriously think it’s the best game ever made and the people who made it are probably the coolest people on this planet.

That said, I think it would be cool if an option allowed the game to take place on a 3 Dimensional orb so you could play in a continuous flow without boundaries. Think like the game Spore when you visit a planet. It could easily work.

Also maybe a shake of the phone could release a mega blast that you only get one per game to save your ass.

Anyway thanks for giving me red spots in my vision whenever I close my eyes. I feel like I’m catching some completely messed up disease and my world is constantly being closed in on by crimson invaders.

  17. Bill says:

Sp1ke – may be the ideas are stupid to you, but I’m thinking in idea #1 there is no 5 million point games maybe – or there would at least have to be different strategies.

Off the screen may be would be too frustrating, but what if it was a kill all dots bomb that also caused the screen to temporarily get too big for the display?

Anyway, your critique was stupid. There, how did that feel?

  18. MIK says:

Great! I am really looking to mode code red, because the normal mode takes too long until it gets difficult. But anyway I want to thank you for your great game and for the update coming! Looking forward to your next game 🙂

  19. Daniel says:

So will the update come out tomorrow or what??????!?!?!?

  20. Justin S. says:

    @Daniel – Hopefully!! I can’t wait! 😀

  21. Solan-mrk-1 says:

This game will be epic with those new modes!

  22. Update is “In Review” as of this moment. Expect it this week, unless we get busted for referencing crack.

  23. Ranteq says:

Maaan, I can’t wait! Stupid approval process… Hopefully it will come out today, worst case tomorrow… I have been waiting for a month now. Code red can’t come soon enough

  24. thegamerocks06 says:

Good to hear that Adam. And i’d be pretty pissed with Apple if they bust you for crack! :p

  25. 0bsidianlink says:

The reason the update is takeing so long us probably because it’s a HUGE update. The minigore update was quick because it was only a grafics update. This update has two new game modes.

  26. Daniel says:

WTF! I can’t wait any longer!!! HURRY UP APPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  27. Justin S. says:

My gawd! Darn Apple. xD Hurry up. 😛

  28. Alex says:

The update has been approved :)! Should be live within 24 hours.

  29. Gennaro says:

Yay. Its finally out, and its download right now. I cant wait!!!

  30. 0bsidianlink says:

Yay it’s out!!!!!! But why is it only v1.2? It’s a freakin HUGE update! It should be v2.0!!!

  31. 0bsidianlink says:

Oh ya, looks like the crack thing was ok.

  32. tyler says:

    update!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  33. Justin S. says:

Haha, I took a short (3 hour) nap to pass the time. Glad it worked. 🙂 This is awesome guys. I’m loving code red mode. Heh, and Guantlet isn’t too bad either. Tilt to Live is now the #1 app on my iTouch.

  34. Tom says:

great that the new update is out!
makes this app even more incredible
a couple of suggestions for improvements:
    – a visible combo timer which resets every kill so it is easier to keep a combo maintained.
    – the 100+ lightning kill achievement does not appear to work
    – a stats option on the menu which tells you total number of dots killed, total deaths, average score etc.

  35. Manu says:

Best game on the AppStore. Doodle Jump is so overrated…
Thanks for the update! It’s awesome.

  36. Justin S. says:

Heh, sorry for another question, but on the achievement for smashing two hundred frozen enemies, does it count if, say, you froze the enemy and then hit it with a nuke, would that still count toward the two hundred, or do you have to physically smash them? Thanks.

  37. Alex says:

    @Justin S.
You have to physically smash into them 200 times in a single game, explosions do not count.

  38. Justin S. says:

Sweet, that’ll make it fun. =P

  39. virgile says:

    Hi,

Nice music. They can buy this music on Itunes ?

    Thank’s

  40. SP1KE says:

Horay its out, its awesome the first time I tried Code Red I was like HOLY S**T WTF after just 2 sec or so 😀

  41. Smelliot says:

I’d love to see new weapons at some point, and maybe even new characters. Or maybe upgrades to your arrow? That’d be cool 🙂

  42. SP1KE says:

Hey, can the Ligting Kill achievement be archived in Code Red ?

  43. Alex says:

@Virgile sorry the soundtrack isn’t commercially available :[.

  44. SangC says:

Please make Tilt to Live go on sale again :(. I really would buy the game for the current price, but my idiot brother bought something less worthy and I’m short about 40 cents in my iTunes Store account and I don’t think I’ll be able to get a hold on an itunes card any time soon. Thanks for reading…

  45. JoelTGM says:

This game is incredible, and this new update ROCKS. That Code Red game mode is exactly what I needed. In the classic game mode it always took a couple minutes for it to actually get fast and challenging enough for big combos, but with code red you can get right into the action. And that gauntlet game mode is genius.
